HOME FOOD PRESERVATION ON-LINE COURSE
Would you like to learn about canning foods at home? Take this online course at no charge! This course is sponsored by the National Center for Home Food Preservation under the auspices of the USDA and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension. Dr. Barbara Ingham, Food Science Specialist, University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension, Madison, piloted this program.
The course is available in four modules, about 1-2 hours each. The modules include: Introduction to Food Preservation, General Canning, Canning Acid Foods, and Canning Low-Acid Foods. This program is designed for people who want to learn about safe food preservation.
The course objectives are:
- Participants will become familiar with various reasons for preserving food and various methods of how to preserve foods at home.
- Participants will gain an understanding of the different steps needed for canning acid and low acid foods at home to ensure the production of safe, high-quality products.
- Participants will become familiar with the materials and equipment needed in home canning.
- 4. Participants will be able to identify and avoid problems with food canned at home.
- 5. Participants will be able to successfully preserve products by the methods presented.
Upon completion of the self-study course and obtaining the minimum average score on the quizzes in each unit you will receive a certificate (a printable .pdf file). There are no continuing education unit credits at this time.
