GARDEN WALK 2009 -
MAXINE & MIKE FOLZ
Weirauch | Rothmeyer | Folz | Meuret | Guiette | Rothschild Village Hall
Maxine & Mike Folz -
1710 Highland Avenue, Weston
Maxine and Mike began work on this tranquil garden 15 years ago. While Maxine does the planting and summer care, Mike does the hardscaping, having outlined all of the beds with stones, paving bricks, or wooden railings.
Maxine developed her skills in the family vegetable garden. However, she became really interested in flower gardening through a friend. Many of her perennials had their start in the gardens of friends and family. Maxine has incorporated many unusual items, trinkets, bikes, ladders, and all sorts of sculptures into her beds, which will surely give you ideas for adding a spark to your own garden.
Other features to notice in Maxine’s garden are a privacy fence holding stately hollyhocks, and small pond near the deck, which adds the calming effect of falling water and is enjoyed by the birds visiting the nearby feeders.
Look for two special items in this garden. In front of the house you will see an unusual caragana tree, and behind the house, an inukshuk, a rock sculpture used as a navigational device by the Inuit People of the Artic region in North America.
Directions: From Rothmeyer’s garden return to Schofield Avenue/Hwy JJ. Turn right, west onto Schofield Avenue JJ going 2 miles to Normandy Street (This will be the street to your left immediately before you reach Walgreen’s) Turn left, south, onto Normandy. Continue on Normandy to Highland Avenue, 1 mile. The Folz’s garden is the first one on Highland Avenue.
