ADULT EDUCATION

Adult education is provided in many ways in our program. Thousands of Marathon County residents benefit annually from nutrition messages found in our "learn while you wait" brochures and displays. "Learn while you wait" sites including Women, Infants, and Children clinics, Health Department immunization clinics and various food pantries give us an opportunity to educate adults in the county.

The Family Resource Center offers an additional avenue to educate adults in a classroom setting. Parents learn about basic nutrition and feeding guidelines for children as part of their Learning Essentials About Parenting (LEAP) twelve-week program.

HMONG PROGRAMMING

Family Resource Center: Several classes are taught focusing on healthy snacks and feeding young children to Hmong daycare providers.

Community Garden: The Hunger Prevention Team has secured and is maintaining a 15-acre community garden. Most of the plots are used by the Hmong families to help supply fresh produce. A large food pantry garden is incorporated into this garden. This allows the site to produce vegetables for more area food pantries.

Monthly lessons are held for eight classes of children age 3-5 at a Southeast Asian preschool. Children are introduced to the basic concept of eating a variety of foods. Activities such as food sampling and puppet shows make this a very hands-on programming effort. Lessons are presented in a bilingual format.

EvenStart: A basic nutrition lesson with an emphasis on the dietary guidelines and how they can fit into the traditional Hmong diet.
