THE COMMUNITY GARDEN
The Wausau Community
Garden, sponsored by the Hunger Prevention Team, is located along
the Rib River, near 48th Avenue, on seventeen acres of land donated
by the city of Wausau for two years. Two hundred families garden
individual plots. In exchange for their plot, families are asked
to give back to the community by sharing some of their produce
with those that do not have a plot and patronize the local food
pantries. Gathering nights are scheduled to facilitate this produce
donation. In 2000, over 20,000 pounds of fresh produce were donated
to local food pantries. The garden yielded approximately 185,000
pounds of produce valued at $240,000.
The Community
Garden has been very popular, especially among the Hmong community.
Volunteers from Attic Corrections, Reynold's Group Home, Lincoln
Hills, Horace Mann and the Neighbor's Place have helped in many
ways such as weeding, watering, and fence building. As more people
become aware that the garden exists, the Hunger Prevention Team
is hopeful that more groups will want to participate, making the
garden a true "Community" Garden in every sense of the word.
