HUNGER PREVENTION MISSION

Hunger Prevention Team of Marathon County is a community coalition that promotes hunger awareness, coordinates services designed to prevent hunger, empowers people, and builds systems to take control over hunger issues.

INITIAL PROJECTS

The Hunger Team of Marathon County had three initial goals when it formed:

  1. Conduct a comprehensive survey that could serve as a gauge as to the extent of hunger in Marathon County.
  2. In collaboration with United Way's First Call, develop a Food Resource Guide that would list all food/nutrition services offered in the county.
  3. Increase the public's awareness of the existence of hunger and poverty in Marathon County by conducting a $14.00 Food Shopping Challenge.

ONGOING PROJECTS

  1. Maintain the community garden that will serve a dual purpose:
    • Provide Marathon County residents a place to grow fresh vegetables for their own families.
    • Provide steady supply of fresh produce to area food pantries through gardener contributions and a food pantry garden that is worked by community volunteers.
  2. Stabilize the supply of food donated to the pantries by looking at the timing of area food drives and the donation practices of area businesses to determine if a plan could be developed that would ensure a steady influx of food to all the pantries throughout the entire year.
  3. Provide commodity food distribution at Neighbors Place.
